Earth Day Tree Planting at Canaan Valley NWR

Celebrate Earth Day 2019 by planting Canaan Balsam Fir and Red Spruce trees at Canaan Valley State Park. The Nature Conservancy staff and interested volunteers will meet at the Canaan Valley Fire Hall at 9:30 on April 22 to restore habitat in one of the most picturesque and least visited parts of the park. Efforts by TNC and Central Appalachian Spruce Restoration Initiative (CASRI) partners are restoring vital parts of the heart of Canaan Fir and Red Spruce habitat and connecting areas from the valley floor to the ridges surrounding.

Resiliency science by TNC shows that Canaan Valley and Cabin Mountain/Dolly Sods are crucial strongholds of biodiversity and important connectors as species move further north in the light of climate change. Your efforts will be rewarding, knowing that these areas add to the restoration of what has been described as one of the best examples of spruce forests known to man. You will be able to return and see the trees you’ve planted as they grow well into the future.
